Happy Monday Y’all
I wanted to start this week off right. There is one song I listen to EVERY morning that motivates me to never look from the stars for my dreams. It’s Kanye’s “Last Call.” This track is one of the best because he describes how NO ONE wanted to give him the chance because he wasn’t a gangster rapper. He was a well dressed dude that just wanted to make inspirational music for people. No gangster gimmicks. Just different music in the over exaggerated world of luxury consumption in Hip Hop.
Over and over again he would try and have his music heard by executives. Over and over again he would be denied because they felt like he and his music didn’t fit the industry mode. There was never a doubt in his mind that he was great. Knowing his worth is what kept him going. Even at the last minute when Capitol records dropped the deal. He signed with Jay-Z and the rest is music history.
Moral of the story: If you don’t believe in yourself don’t expect anyone else to either.
My favorite lyrics:
“Last year shoppin my demo, I was tryin’ to shine
Every motherfucker told me that I couldn’t rhyme
Now I could let these dream killers kill my self-esteem
Or use my arrogance as the steam to power my dreams”
“So I don’t listen to the suits behind the desk no more
You niggaz wear suits ’cause you can’t dress no more”
“I ain’t play the hand I was dealt, I changed my cards
I prayed to the skies and I changed my stars”
“Don’t let anyone who has the power to sign, tell you that you don’t have the power to rhyme.”
Each of these lyrics is special to me because they represent that you can’t let people who don’t understand your vision stop your dreams.
Below is the same song but the second half explains in detail of Kanye’s initial struggle getting into the music game. It’s very inspirational. No. His story doesn’t just represent music, it represents ANYTHING you want to do on this earth.
Have a great day and don’t let ANYONE (no matter what their opinion) stop you from obtaining your goals.
